As most of you know, I don't enjoy conflict. I rarely post things that upset me or get into arguments on facebook about things I disagree with. In fact, a lot of the time, I try to lighten the mood if at all possible. However, this is something that has been bothering me for a little while now and I'd like to address it personally.
Every once in a while, I'll be on youtube or facebook and the 'Fifty Shades Darker' trailer will come up. I never read the books or saw the first movie, but I have read summaries and reviews. It makes me incredibly sad that people find entertainment in such a dark and awful thing. To romanticize abuse, to promote this fairytale that if you love someone enough they will change for you is truly terrible.
The abuse being presented here is not the work of fiction but actually, happens to real people. This isn't cute, romantic, or sexy. This isn't a love story. This is a reality for so many people trapped in abusive relationships, and to encourage it through almost pornographic entertainment is disgusting. I have watched many loved ones get stuck in these kinds of relationships and it is absolutely heartbreaking. Abuse is not something to be praised. Whether it's "consented" to or not.
I watch so many of my friends post and post about how women should have equal rights and how we should end domestic violence, but then they flock to see these movies about the exact opposite of what they're fighting for!
So, instead of going to see Fifty Shades Darker, I will be going to see The Lego Batman Movie tonight. I encourage you all to do the same.
